Remembering Mick Galpin

Established in 1983, our parent company Tas Ocean Shipping was originally owned and operated by local seafaring industry legend Mick Galpin.

He is remembered as a fearless sea dog who had the ability to jump aboard and master the controls of any sea vessel (or piece of machinery).

Quite often he would mull over ideas and problems late into the night, just to ensure the job was done correctly the next day.

And you could say he was also known for his ability to teach by example and was a great leader of his crew.

In the early days of the aquaculture industry in Tasmania, Mick was a pioneer of many support services including the towing of the salmon cages throughout Tasmanian waters and moving heavy machinery with his tug/barges.

Whilst undertaking a tow from Port Kembla to Geraldton, our tug the Greshanne, was instrumental in towing a ship in distress away from an impending grounding on a reef near Esperance.

In a written commendation from the State Premier in 2018, Mick was thanked and acknowledged for this contribution to the state.

Sadly, due to a sudden health issue, Mick was taken from us well before his day. And he is survived by his family who now runs the business as Phoenix Marine Group.
